Every legend has a few versions. So do ours. One legend traces mantou back some 1,800 years to Zhuge Liang, the famed strategist of the Three Kingdoms period. As the story goes, somewhere along a military campaign, necessity called for an offering, and steamed buns shaped in place of human heads became the answer. The history gets a little hazy from there. The bun, thankfully, stuck around. Ours have had a few lives of their own. Different fillings, different forms, different years at Bao Bei.
