CANCER BATS INTERVIEW
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT TORONTO?
I love that Toronto always has something going on. People are always hustling and creating amazing things and it’s a great environment to be a part of and inspired by.
YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO BE PLAYING THE BOVINE SEX CLUB IN TORONTO, AS PART OF IT’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE MEMORIES FROM EITHER PERFORMING AT THE BOVINE OR SEEING ANY SHOWS THERE?
The Bovine is where we played some of our first shows when Cancer Bats started in 2005. I remember playing there and the bar being packed out and crazy and having that feeling of ” were really doing it!” Hahaha
THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW YOU WILL BE PLAYING IS A BENEFIT FOR THE PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL CANCER FOUNDATION, ANY REASON YOU CHOSE TO DONATE THE PROCEEDS OF THE TICKETS TO THIS FOUNDATION?
We’ve just finished doing a whole charity campaign for The PMCF over our last European tour where we raised a ton of money, so I figured we would keep it going and raise some more!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE TORONTO VENUE YOU LOVE TO PLAY IN?
Along with The Bovine, we started out playing at Sneaky Dees and it’s still one of my favourite places to play. It’s hands down one of the best bars in the world, run by the raddest people.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE OR POST-SHOW RESTAURANTS OR BARS YOU TO WHEN YOU ARE PLAYING A GIG IN TORONTO?
For a pre or post show vibe, if you want something relaxed with awesome staff and vibe, Bell Woods brewery is the best. They make their own amazing beer and the food there is beyond great. Again having spent so many years in bars around the world, it’s awesome to have one of the best ones in your neighbourhood.
ANY CRAZY TOUR EXPERIENCES?
A few years ago when we were doing festivals in Europe, we were opening a festival in Italy. Guns and Roses took so long to sound check and set up that they held the gates and wouldn’t let anyone in. Also, because it took so long, the festival told us our set was now 10 mins long. They opened the gates as we started our set and people walked the 1 mile from the gate to our stage just as we finished haha. We weren’t bummed. We just went to Switzerland to go swimming 🙂
ANY TORONTO FESTIVALS YOU LOVE GOING TO OR LOOK FORWARD TO ATTENTING THIS YEAR?
I really wanted to go to Field Trip this year, but sadly we were on tour. I wanted to watch Robyn!
ANY PLANS FOR THE REST OF THEY YEAR AFTER FINISHING YOUR TOUR IN EUROPE?
This is our last run of touring for our album Searching For Zero. Now it’s time to hang out in the city again and be inspired to write some more party bangers!
